CALIFORNIA UNITY BAR STATEMENT Denouncing ICE Raids and Unauthorized Deployment of the National Guard in California

California for ALL — Not Fear. Not Division.

The California Unity Bar, speaking with one voice on behalf of its chapters across the state, unequivocally condemns the Trump Administration’s latest abuses of power: the mass ICE raids targeting immigrant communities and the unauthorized deployment of a federalized National Guard and the U.S. Marine Corps on California soil — executed without the consent of our Governor or the people of the state of California in blatant violation of established federal and state laws.

These actions are an affront to the rule of law, a desecration of our Constitution, and an attack on the fundamental values that bind our diverse and democratic society.

The California Unity Bar exists to promote judicial diversity, equity, inclusion, and collaboration in service of a legal system that truly reflects and protects all Californians. Our mission is grounded in the belief that justice cannot flourish where fear reigns, and that the strength of our state lies in its rich diversity — of people, of voices, of communities.

California is not merely a collection of cities and counties — it is a vibrant tapestry of people from every walk of life and every corner of the globe. California is a state of immigrants. It is a state of hope, of sanctuary, of belonging. It is a patchwork of cultures and experiences that, from Los Angeles to the Bay Area and beyond, California draws its strength from together form the most vibrant and innovative state in the nation. From the Central Valley to San Diego all who call it home.

Our strength, our innovation, and our culture come from this rich diversity. It is this very fabric — woven through generations of immigrants, dreamers, and strivers — that the Trump Administration now seeks to tear apart through fear, intimidation, and militarization.

To conduct military-style immigration raids in the heart of our communities — to send the National Guards and U.S. Marines onto California soil in violation of the principles of

federalism and without state consent — is to trample on these values. And now, this campaign of intimidation has reached our most sacred spaces: raids have been conducted in and around elementary schools, targeting the families of young children; migrant workers — the backbone of California’s agricultural economy — have been subjected to aggressive enforcement actions; and in an outrageous display of force, a local union leader was violently arrested in front of the very workers they were defending. These actions are not about law enforcement; they are about power and control. They are about instilling fear, sowing division, and attempting to intimidate communities that have every right to live in peace and dignity.

Such conduct is a betrayal of our mission. We are committed to building a legal profession and judiciary that serves and represents all Californians, not a select few. We advocate for access to justice, for an inclusive and equitable legal system, and for the fair treatment of all people under the law — regardless of their immigration status, the color of their skin, or the language they speak.

As attorneys, we have taken an oath not only to uphold the law, but to safeguard the principles of liberty and justice upon which our nation was founded. We cannot — and will not — stand by as constitutional principles are subverted and human rights violated under the guise of enforcement.

California is for ALL. California is not for militarization. It is not for fear. It is not for the politics of division. It is not for fascism under the guise of law and order. It is not for the destruction of democracy or to disregard the Constitution whose principles govern us all.

We call upon all members of the legal community, our fellow bar associations, the judiciary, and all Californians to stand with us in this moment. We must resist these abuses of power. We must speak out for the vulnerable. We must defend the vision of a California for ALL — where every individual is treated with dignity, respect, and humanity.

In unity, in resolve, and in defense of our deepest values, we rise to the challenge.
